A virgin trip... in atlantic salmon country

I´m in St.Johns NL Canada at the time, and have just got back from the trip of my lifetime! In remote Southern Labrador, there are still a few rivers that no people have ever fished.... sounds to good to be true? Think about this, Labrador ins more than 28 Sq Kilometers, 2/3 of the size of all of Norway and only 28.000 people live there. And its remote, only way to get there is by helicopter or bush planes.

We had two NRS rafts to float it. Its just a unique feeling when you are the first humans in arias like this. We had seen the river from the helicopter before we started going down, but the scenery and the fishing that met us as we where going down, where something else.... after each turn, we found new pools, aggressive fish and world class scenery!

Virgin Waters...

I´m back in Canada, this time to fish totally virgin waters in Labrador, Canada. Its not many spots left like this in the world, and I feel very fortunate to be able to do this. After all, there are not many white places left on the atlantic salmon map.

Parts of it has been helifished, but never with rafts. Two beautiful NRS rafts got slinged with helicopter in to the river.

We are in to the last day of the expedition now, and will finnish it by the end of the day. I have never seen so many fantastic pools and butifull senery in my life.

We are the crew of five, a multinational expedition. Chris the expedition leader (CAN), Adam the helicopter pilot (CAN), fishing pioneer and founder of Loop Christer (SWE), Camp manager and master caster Claudio (ARG) and me, the photo boy, Yngve, (NOR).

Hunt River Lodge

What a fantastic corner of the planet I´m in right now. A two hour helicopter flight from Main River I was in las week, and it doesent get much better than this.

Im at Hun River in Northern Labrador right now fishing for atlantic salmon. River is at the time packed with fish, and the place is wild! Had a mama black bear and two cubs acros teh river from my room here the other day, and as I was photographing a angler playing a fish a fox, cam right up to me and was very curious on all the clikking from the camera. Not to mention the house pet, "Buddy" a ground hog that comes up to eat crackers everyday.

Just a few words from Main River Lodge. I got to New Foundland, Canada the night of the 4. July. The day after we flew in to Main River Lodge as I am shooting and filming marketing material for the camp. Its a world class lodge for salmon fishing. It has a bit of history to it as well, as Lee Wulff put up the first building here in 1951, and used it al the way to 1958. Fishing has been good, and Ill post some later...

I´m on my way out the door soon, helicopter will arrive any second, and I will spend a Saturday night in Goos Bay... Don´t know if that is a good or a bad thing, but I guess I´ll find out...;) Sunday is of for the Hunt River Lodge, to start the same project there as I have done here.

As we are moving all our pictures, films and projects over and out to our brand new Final Cut Server, there is a lot of old stuff to go through. After having this as my professional day to day job for the last 15 years, there is of course a lot of cool stuff and great adventures that comes up. Here's a few things that I want to show you... :)

I think I can safely say that in one way or another the Scanout Team is working more or less 24/7. We are lucky enough to work with the things that we love the most: photography, videography, design, social medias, editing and so on.

Now... Don't get me wrong, - we don't 'work - work' 24/7. We do not take pics., edit or write something all the time, but we work with our creativity 24/7. Inspiration is a major keyword in our business. How are we inspired? What makes the brain start working? The creativity float?

Of course: it varies from person to person. I get my inspiration from watching YouTube & Vimeo. Looking at blogs, Facebook, Twitter & Flicr. Reading books & magazines. Downloading and scrolling through new apps. Talking with people. Sometimes you can read a book, - take a walk and start daydreaming. Suddenly, maybe in the middle of the night, you come to think of something: A cool new project. A new angle. A different view.

You might think: 'That was a general answer'. Yes, it is. Because: Inspiration is all around. Use it!

We visited the craziest shop here the other day. It's a second hand and antiques store filled with loads and loads of old and new stuff. Useful and useless stuff. Funny and stupid stuff. Things you never knew existed. Things you always wanted to have, but never earlier found. Well, yeah. I think you get the picture ;) And if you don't: check out these pics.

Shooting in a Snowhotel

Last weekend we were actually shooting a Snowhotel! Yes, you read right: A hotel built in snow and ice :) Imagine going into a big pile of snow, and you find a ice - chapel with a 5,5 meter high roof, several bedrooms and a bar. Quite amazing!

Bjorli Snowhotel is a part of what I consider to be the coolest hotel chain in the world: Classic Norway. They've got ten hotels in the northwestern part of Norway, and every hotel is unique and special in one way or another. No wonder I like hotels... ;)

All of these shots are taken with existing light. It helps to be able to have ISO up to 12 800 in normal use... I've also used High Dynamic Range imaging occasionally. Using Aperture and the Nik Software plug- in HDR efex pro, I feel I have an ocean of possibilities with that technique.

A few weeks back we were in the Southeastern part of Norway, and shot a musicvideo with Levi Henriksen & Thomas Mårud, and 'Bra Landsens Folk' :) Great people!

Most people know me mainly as a Photographer, but since Nikon came out with their D - SLR cameras, I find videography fun again! Playing with the depth of field, moving the objects in and out of focus, using high - end lenses... I could go on forever! Filming with a D- SLR certainly opens a new world in videography :)

Air Display

Are you also traveling a lot? I've got a good tip for you :)

I often have to set up my office away from my office, where I have multiple screens. I can't always bring an extra screen, and in those situations I use the iPad - application 'Air Display'. It is a great app.,- it makes your iPad the second monitor. It links the Mac/PC and iPad together with a Wi - Fi network, and if you are not on a Wi - Fi network you can create an Ad hoc network and still be up and running :)

It's also great if a client or someone else wants to keep up to paste on what you are doing, shooting, retouching etc.

Ready, Steady....

We are soon about to launch our new Scanout Magazine application for iPad, and MAN we look forward to it!

We have launched several Scanout Magazines as a PDF type of document earlier,- where we filled the magazines with the content we wanted to make and thought was cool. And then we hoped that others also liked it :) The few magazines we've made has been downloaded loads of times, but we always felt we had a bigger potential. And then the iPad arrived! You see; producing images for print is great, but you are limited by the amount you can put into an article, a campaign or a book.

Our new app contains more than 65 pictures, with galleries for each theme. There are also some soundtracks tagging along the pictures, so that when you see the galleries - you can hear someone tell the story behind the photos. In addition we have also added some films along to the subjects to give you an even broader understanding...

So, when is it time to say: GOOO! (?)

The app will be available on the App Store (iTunes) from the middle of December. Follow us on Facebook or on this blog for some further updates.

I looked through some video- material here the other day, - and it brought back a lot of good memories. We've got above average good workdays here at Scanout. That's the way it is when living and working goes hand in hand: we simply love our work!

So, we decided to share some of the clips with you through our new 'series': Scanout@Work. They're not always well edited and long clips, but hopefully they will put a smile on your face and urge you to go out and live life to the fullest.

Alfa Uniform :: Backstage

Wow. Time flies, - it's already middle of november. I was reminded of this last week when we shot the pictures for the Alfa shoe factories latest series: Uniform shoes. Hello, Down jacket.

Anyways,- back to the shoot. The uniform shoes from Alfa are ment for the armed forces, paramedics, special forces etc., and I saw the opportunity for some real action pictures. We gathered the hoops, brought smoke grenades, firearms ++ and headed for the forest (it was a legal area for shooting,- just so you know ;) The models started shooting, and so did we.

I've never had a heavy armored 'contractor' holding my flash before...

The Bird

As being in the business for quite some time, helicopters is one of the most usefull tools in remote arias. It helps you get the shots you want, and it also helps getting you, and a crew where ever you want to be.

After spending some time og the East Coast of Canada, I have been very found of the Agusta Koala 119, lots of power, long fuel range, high cruise speed and lots of room...

Italians can make a sporty spacewagon;)

Stay Dry!

When I dont have a boat, bridge or a helicopter to take me over the river to get me that extra shot I really want, I have to important things to help me. A drysuite for me, and a waterproof backpack for my camera equipment.

As for the drysuite, I use Kokatat Expedition. It is a GoreTex Drysuite, originaly made for kayaking. It is light and packable and ventilates so I can keep it on for a longer periode withoute getting wet by sweat; It keeps me dry!

As for the camerabag I use Lowe Pro Dryzone 200. I have been using it for years, and it has saved me more then once, and it is by fare my best choice! It is a secure place to keep my cameras dry, eaven when swimming og wading deep. Keep the zipper lubed, and It will keep your stuff dry for ever!

My first review on the iPad.

You may think I'm a gear freak, and you may be right. But I'm not a gear freak for the sake of having the gear,- it’s all the possibilities!

And new possibility often comes with new gear; Like when the new Nikon D3s came out with HD- movie, and like now when the iPad is coming out.

I got my iPad two days after the sale started, from the Fifth Avenue Apple Store in NYC. I wasn’t the first in line, but I wasn’t far behind.

What fascinates me the most with the iPad is how you as a wiever can decide in a much larger scale on what you want to see. I find words like revolutionating the publishing business large, but never the less true! With it is the possibilities to combine film, pictures and text how you can talior it yourselves. I can now start to make content, and you can easy decide how much, - and what you want to see.

It will not only change publishing, but also marketing. And the way catalogs and marketing- content is made and distributed.

How Scanout will use the iPad and similar technologies in the future? First of all we make the content, and we will keep on making the content, - also for the iPad. We have been waiting for technology like the iPad so we can share much more, and much easier, - with no boundaries.

I hope that iBooks will have more titles in, as this sytem looks amazing. And I certainly hope my next book will be in this format! Easy to distribute, and it also gives smaller publishers the opportunity to publish their books in several languages as you no longer rely on prints... And yes; a coffe- table book would look great! Specially I see no further huge need for paperback - books. iPad gives you the books cheap, - and that was the Paperback’s superior goal.

My new travelling, easy - to - update- portfolio will be in «Photos», let me correct: it already is in «Photos»... Fantastic...

The huge winners of the iPad is without a doubt me and you,- as the reader and user!

If you already have’nt seen it, have a look at Sports Illustrateds way of thinking with the new «tablet» technology... It was lauched before the iPad. HERE

World Records

Setting Guinness world records is not something that is done every day, specially when it comes to breaking concrete blocks and baseball- bats. Together with father and son Læret, thys did set 4 new records, and we documentet the happening Scanoutstyle.

Why not just take the pictures and get it over with?

Well, there is more to what we do than just take the actual shots. First of all, we don’t take pictures, - we make them. And second of all we tell the complete story: the how’s, the why’s and the actual story behind,- not just the event...

Tech WARNING!

Nikon D3s is the tool of my dreams. A fantastic camera: fullframe, 9 fps, great files even at high ISO speeds... Yes, I have said it before, and that Nikon desided to put inn HD video as well don’t exactly make it any worse of a tool....

Lightingwise I need something that can keep up with me in 9 fps. And the Profoto Pro 8A does the magic for me. Perfectly even lighted, and it keeps up the speed. Nice

Postproduction is also a keyfactor. I´m a Nikon Capture NX2 - guy, and just loves the Nik Colour Efex 3.0 kit...

I guess most of you have heard about Bjørn Dæhlie, - the most winning winter Olympian ever. His cross-country clothing brand BJ Sport is state of the art technical ski- wear with the slogan «pure function».

I shot their last catalog right before Christmas. It's a lot of pressure shooting a campaign like that; justifying the pictures for great quality products and «the best winter Olympian» ever...

Luckily I had a dream-crew to work with. The BJ- crew has lots of good working spirit and humor topped up with creative talent. No wonder their stuff is as good as it is!

Here are a few examples on what we did. See the film to see some of the finished shots ;)

Tech. - talk:
Everything was shot with Nikon D3x, to get that great dynamic color- range and plenty of MPX.
Lens vise I used 14-24, 24-70, 70-200, 85 PC (if you haven’t tried it, go get one!), 105, 60, 200-400 and 600.
Don't know what else to say: They perform ALWAYS! No worries!

For lightning we used 2x Profoto B2r, Pro 8a Air, and Softboxes, reflectors and dishes. Sometimes though to light an arena as the arena lights are, but you have to actually light it the opposite way... Might be though to understand... Or to light a sunset at 11 pm when it's pitch black outside. Lights are one thing; - they are great, but the light shaping tools is by far state of the art. And as you know, you are never stronger than your weakest point. I still haven't found one!

I also used a lot of reflector- lights in the mornings and evenings this time. Lastolite Trigrips, and skylite panels.

Demolition Time

Scanout is doing a project together with the karate- athletes Narve and Christoffer Læret, - a recordbreaking project. On Narve´s (43) list over “things done”, you can amongst other things read about 12 world records, world champion titles and starring the American cinema movie “Record Breakers – What makes the tick”. Narves son, Christoffer (16), recently became the Norwegian Champion in karate, and now father and son will show you the most spectacular and honest photos ever taken of the most extreme part of karate, - Tameshiwari. There will be breaking of coconuts, concrete, wood, stone and baseball – bats, precision cutting with samurai sword, extreme body conditions and much more.

Læret is well known from Norwegian television, as well as TV – shows from the whole world. Together with Scanout- Photographer Yngve Ask and the most extreme Nikon – gear, they will make the most spectacular picture – series and short films ever made of the extreme side of martial arts. It´s honest, it´s extreme, it´s brutal, it´s world records and it´s… Demolition time!
